PGMC’s Coral Transplantation in Lambason (Millari Island) Marine Sanctuary

June 10, 2019

Coral reefs are widely recognized to be important ecologically and biologically. However, reefs have been noted under stressful conditions due to various natural and man-made disturbances. Similarly, coral reef in Lambason island (Millari Island) had been stressed by various human activities notably due to ill methods of fishing by the local folks.

To provide relief from stressors, years ago, the LGU in partnership with PGMC declared portion of reef area in this island as marine sanctuary for protection and enhancement. With PGMC technical team and in participation of fisher folks in Brgy. Cagdianao, a coral transplantation was conducted to facilitate fast recovery of stressed corals. This activity raises awareness among fisher folks about coral reef rehabilitation by asexual method where fragments were taken from already-detached colony called coral of opportunity.
